Klagenfurt (92,000 inhabitants) the capital city of Carinthia is only 7 km away from Krumpendorf. It will only take you a few minutes to get there by car, by boat or on a bike. The city has a very special appeal and beauty. It is for good reason that it is called the “Renaissance jewel at Lake Wörthersee”. The 800-year old city centre with its perfectly restored Renaissance buildings, courtyards and squares was mostly created by Italian architects (Klagenfurt has already won the highly prized “Europa-Nostra” award three times for its exemplary renovation work). In summer, daily guided tours through the old city centre are offered free of charge.
Enjoy its liveliness...
The city, however, is anything but a museum – it is alive, and very much so. There are daily farmers’ markets, bustling pedestrian zones with designer label boutiques, shops, cafés, typical Austrian inns, small snack bars and elegant restaurants.
Here in the South, we know how to celebrate: Take the example of the huge Silvester Carnival in the old city centre; thousands of visitors come from Germany, Italy and Slovenia especially for this event to celebrate the arrival of the New Year with mulled or sparkling wine, enjoying the music of trumpet blowers and other music groups. The end of the Old Year is celebrated in a fun and yet reflective way.
“Neuer Platz”, the square with Klagenfurt’s landmark, the “Lindwurm” and the Renaissance town-hall, is the centre of the city and lively all year round. From the stylish “Christkindl” market (the most beautiful market in the entire Alps-Adriatic region), to the Easter market, the Carinthian Valley Festival, the annual meeting of Smart owners, cultural, sports and arts events – Neuer Platz never sleeps. And all this activity climaxes in the annual “Altstadtzauber” – a huge festival at the end of the summer where everybody joins in. The two days of this celebration are visited by more than 100,000 Klagenfurt citizens and guests.
